Provenance:
Private property, Berlin.

The sketch was probably executed as a study for the Moscow fleamarket. The artist presented a composition on this theme at the eighth exhibition of the association of travelling exhibitions in 1880 (its whereabouts is no longer known; various studies and sketches for the painting are held by the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian State Museum, and the National Gallery in Minsk.)
