Florentine court painter, 16th century
Portrait of a lady, probably Princess Isabella de Medici-Orsini,
oil on canvas, 61.3 x 46.4 cm, framed
This portrait is considered to bear stylisitic semblance to Florentine court painters such as Santi di Tito and Alessandro Allori. Professor Elizabeth Pilliod has attributed this work to an artist inspired by Northern European portrait styles such as that of Girolamo Macchietti, and identified the sitter as Princess Isabella de Medici-Orsini on grounds of its strong similarities to a fresco fragment which was once thought to depict Bianca Cappello (Uffizi, inv. 1890, no. 1500) (written communication). The results of Karla Langedijk’s research have now led most scholars to regard said fragment as depicting Isabella (1542–1576), the daughter of Cosimo I de’ Medici and Elenora of Toledo (see K. Langedijk, The Portraits of the Medici, Florence 1983, I: 1091–1098, cat. no. 63).
