These figures were held by the initiates of a secret society of the Tolai people called Dukduk. The members of this secret society appear from the sea in large conical masks and tufted raffia skirts. They verify taboos as well as judge and execute offenders. The dancers, whilst wearing the tubuan masks, were regarded as divine beings whose judgement and actions could not be questioned. 32 cm high, wood. Early 20th century.
