Jacobus van der Haagen (The Hague 1656-1715)

Jacobus van der Haagen (The Hague 1656-1715) - Old Master Paintings

A still life with fruits, flowers, oysters and a full wine glass, oil on canvas, 76 x 63.5 cm, in a carved and gilded frame

Provenance:
Apsley Estate (until 1945).

We are grateful to Dr Claudia Salvi, Paris, who has been able to determine that this painting is the work of van der Haagen. A certificate is available.

Dr Salvi made the identification of this still life on the basis of stylistic comparisons with other documented works by the artist, who was active as a landscape and still life painter. The work of this son of the great landscape painter, Joris van der Haagen demonstrates, as does this still life, numerous parallels with the oeuvre of Abraham van Beyeren, who was also active in The Hague. The elegant composition with its façon de Venise glass, the silver box, the oysters and the tazza give an insight into the courtly taste of the royal seat of The Hague.
