Provenance:
European private collection.
Due to its fine brushwork around the face and hands, as well as the elaborately rendered clothing, this painting points to the circle of Caravaggists, being close stylistically to the work of Giovanni Baglione.
Two paintings by Baglione, which depict Samson and Delilah, are listed in Roman inventories: an oval picture, dated 1783, in the ownership of the Colonna family and now in a private collection in New York; another work (current location unknown) was mentioned in 1621 in the inventory of Cardinal Benedetto Giustiniani, no dimensions given (S. Danesi Squarzina, La collezione Giustiniani, Inventari I, Turin 2003, p. 167, no. 138).
A possible attribution to Giovanni Baglione (Rome 1571 – 1643) was suggested by Dr Andrea G. de Marchi.
