Mathijs Schoevaerdts (Brussels circa 1660- after 1702)

Mathijs Schoevaerdts (Brussels circa 1660- after 1702) - Old Master Paintings

A lively coastal landscape with a fortress and a harbour in the background, oil on canvas, 27.9 x 40.4 cm, framed

Mathijs Schoevaerdts entered the workshop of Adriaen Frans Boudewijns as an apprentice in 1682, leaving as a master of the Brussels Guild of Painters in 1690. He was appointed as dean of the guild as early as 1692. Schoevaerdts drew fully from the rich tradition of 17th-century Flemish landscape painting in his works. He took the lead, above all, from Jan Brueghel the Elder, the influence of whose work may be seen in his landscapes. Despite this orientation towards local traditions, he also produced his own independent compositions. As well as the richly figural groups typical of his work, his depictions of the landscape exhibit his debt to the Flemish School. This painting is catalogued at the RKD, The Hague, as an authentic work by the artist (artwork number 13383).
