Attributed to Johann Friedrich Grooth (Stuttgart 1717–1806 St. Petersburg)
Wild animals before a landscape, oil on canvas, 133 x 143 cm, framed
The attribution to Grooth, who was painter to the Imperial Russian court, is based on the strong stylistic similarities between this painting and the animal paintings that he was commissioned to execute by Tsarinas Elizabeth Petrovna and Catherine II for the Monbijou Pavillon in the park at Tsarskoe Selo. That series of work, in common with the present painting, was executed in an almost rectangular format.
