Michel Hubert Descours
(Bernay 1707–1775)
A dog on a cushion,
oil on canvas, 47.5 x 62 cm, framed
We are grateful to Claudia Salvi for suggesting the attribution (written communication).
With the standardisation of dog breeds in the eighteenth century, dog portraits became a fashionable genre. The present portrait of a lap dog testifies to the elegance of the period of Louis XV. The picture was painted by Michel Descours, one of the few French portraitists who, although not working in Paris, was able to achieve importance beyond a regional level. Throughout his career, Descours worked as an independent portrait painter in the small town of Bernay and was one of the best French portraitists of the mid-eighteenth century. He was highly praised by his teacher, Hyacinthe Rigaud, in whose workshop he was active between 1731 and 1745, Descours received commissions from throughout Europe and portraits by the artist are to be found in Dresden and Potsdam.
