This small panel was undoubtedly commissioned for private devotion. A likely candidate for the authorship would appear to be Adriaen Ysenbrant, with whose idiom the present painting shares many similarities. Ysenbrant frequently quotes from the works of earlier masters, such as Jan van Eyck and Hugo van der Goes. There are also affinities with the pictures of his contemporaries in Bruges, Ambrosius Benson and Lancelot Blondeel. A considerable number and range of quality paintings grouped around Ysenbrant’s name indicate a large workshop.
