Vincent Adriaenssen
(Antwerp 1595–1675 Rome)
Jesus in the house of Martha and Mary, oil on copper, 15 x 23 cm, framed,
We are grateful to Dr Ursula Härting for confirming the authenticity of this painting (certificate dated August 2010). This picture is an early work by the Antwerp painter, Adriaenssen, whose works are often confused with those of the Francken workshop because of their similarity with them. His work has also been confused with that of Vincent Malo. As the brother of the popular still life painter, Alexander Adriaenssen, he was trained in Antwerp. Later he would be appointed court painter for the cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin in Paris, until he moved to Rome. He appears to have lost his left arm in 1663, probably as a soldier, with the result that he was given the nickname, “Mozzo”. The small copper panel worked in fine glazes still follows in the tradition of the Antwerp school and its genre-like background corresponds with it, too.
