Lot No. 518

Dirk Helmbreker

(Haarlem 1624–1696 Rome)
Peasants resting outside the walls of a ruined city, oil on canvas, 57 x 82.5 cm, framed,

We are grateful to Prof Giancarlo Sestieri, Rome, for confirming the authenticity of this work (certificate dated June 2010). Dirk Helmbreker was active in the workshop of Pieter de Grebbers, before being admitted to the St. Guild of St. Luke in Haarlem in 1652. In 1699 he went to Rome, where he was associated with the Bentvleughels. After a long stay in Paris, Helmbreker finally settled in Rome in 1681. Helmbreker’s compositions were extremely popular with collectors and sold for high prices. The present painting must have been executed at the height of his career, since it features the elements which made his work so popular: the peasant genre theme and the southern surroundings before the ruins of an ancient city in the Roman Campagna.
