(1760-1849) Onden no suisha (‘The water wheel near Onden’), from the series: ‘Fugaku sanjurokkei’ (The 36 views of Mount Fuji), signature stamp: ‘Saki no Hokusai litsu hitsu’, publisher’s stamp: Eijudo, polychrome woodblock print, 25.5 x 37.6 cm (sheet size). According to Gordon Friese, this print is a later variant print of the original edition. Common to all sheets are the ground plate, the grey plate for the house and the blue plate for the detail drawing of Mount Fuji and the water. Simple colours were employed by the artist. The alignment of the colour plates is often no longer exact. In addition, many lines have been broadened due to being flattened, or broken altogether. (CT)
