Georg Christoph Teufel, Baron of Gundersdorff (1558-1608), came from a Lower Austrian aristocratic family. In 1575 he set out for his Grand Tour, visiting Padua, Bologna, and Siena. Following his return, he was appointed castellan of Wiener Neustadt in 1584. In 1589 he married the widow Anna von Wallstein and in 1603, having become a widower himself, he wedded Barbara von Breuner. Teufel made a military career as a soldier in the emperor’s service. In 1604 he was appointed colonel and, leading a regiment of 1000 cavaliers, was seconded to the governor of Moravia. Teufel’s tomb is in the parish church of Winzendorf near Wiener Neustadt.
