Ingvar Bergström confirmed the present painting as an autograph work by Simon Renard de Saint-André in a letter (June 1972) to the owner. Renard de Saint-André was a skilled painter of Vanitas still lifes under the influence of Cornelis Norbertus Gysbrechts (active 1659–1675).
