An early collected Fang mask. Border Cameroon and Gabon. 19th century.
Wood, 29 cm high.
A great stylized mask with elongated nose and high forehead. This mask was collected before the German Expressionists started their search for new forms in Ethnographic Collections in Germany. Die Brücke were the first to use these institutes as a source of inspiration. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff started using the clear concave shapes of these masks, after having seen the Einsteins Negro Plastik in 1915. Einstein writes that African sculpture is 'characterized by its religious purpose and its cubic space perception'. Schmidt-Rottluff's sculpture followed both the visual and the religious aspect in his woodcuts.
