Marcantonio Franceschini and workshop

Marcantonio Franceschini and workshop - Old Master Paintings

(Bologna 1648-1729) and workshop,
Hagar and the Angel,
oil on canvas, 179 x 220 cm, framed

A similar version of the present painting was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 11 December 1996 (lot 42), while another variant is preserved in the Spinola Collection in the Galleria Nazionale in Genoa (published in. D. Miller, Marcantonio Franceschini, 2001, p. 196, fig. 95).

Franceschini had numerous students both in his workshop in Bologna and at his summer residence in Belpoggio. The handling of the colours and the treatment of surface textures in the present painting are reminiscent of the style of Giacinto Garofalini, one of the artist’s most important collaborators. Marcantonio Franceschini was under the influence of his teacher Carlo Cignani and Bolognese Neoclassicism. The pose of the angel corresponds to that of Romulus in the fresco by Agostino Carracci in the Palazzo Magnani in Bologna. Franceschini painted numerous religious and mythological subjects for patrons throughout Europe.
