The attribution to the Russian court painter Grooth is based on strong stylistic resemblances of this painting to the animal paintings Grooth executed in the service of the Russian empresses Elisabeth Petrovna and Catherine II for Monbijou Pavilion in the park of Zarskoje Selo. These pictures feature almost square formats, as does the present painting.
