(Krems 1739–1823 Vienna)
Southern Italian mountain landscape,
signed lower right: Wutky,
oil on canvas, 120 x 150 cm, framed

Provenance:
owned for many years by a European princely house.

Wutky was a student at the Viennese Academy from 1759 under Martin van Mytens the Younger, becoming a member in 1770. In 1776 he moved to Italy, where he settled in Rome. Frequent travels to Naples gave him access to precedents for his famous depictions of volcanic eruptions. Wutky was considered by his contemporaries to be an equal to Jacob Philipp Hackert with his Classical Italian landscapes. In 1805 Wutky returned once more to Italy, where he managed to regain his former success.
