Lot No. 126

Roman school, c. 1700

Roman school, c. 1700 - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

Moses striking the rock, black chalk, on laid paper, inscribed "Ciro Ferri" in pen and brown ink, 29,5 x 43,5 cm, fixed to support, mounted, unframed, (Sch)

Provenance:
Collection Jan Baptist de Graaf (Amsterdam 1742-1804), Lugt 1120 (Blindstempel), private collection Germany.

The large composition resembles sheets of the same subject executed on the occasion of the concorso of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome in 1703. Several drawings of them are published in: Angela Cipriani, Enrico Valeriani: I disegni di figura nell'Archivio Storico dell'Accademia di San Luca, Vol. 2, Rome 1989, pp. 25-33. The volume mentions two artists, who took part in the competition, but no drawings are existant in the Accademia: Giovanni Battista Brughi (Romano) and Antonio Caldana (Liovornese). The present drawing may derive from one of these artists. In any case the sheet can stylistically be attributed to a Roman follower of Ciro Ferri around 1700, to whom the drawing was once attributed to.

We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Jörg Martin Merz, University of Münster for the scientific support.
