Ceres (Abundantia) and the four elements, oil on canvas, 62 x 107 cm, framed

The present painting is based on a work by Jan Brueghel the Elder from c. 1615, which is preserved at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. The Madrid painting is, in turn, a variation on a 1604 work by Jan Brueghel which is currently in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Other versions of this composition were auctioned at Sotheby’s, London, on 6 July 2000 (as lot 49) and at Christie’s, London, on 9 July 2015 (as lot 15). An additional version was at the Leonard Koetser Gallery in London in 1958.
