Tapestry fragment,
Tournai (Belgium), c. 189 x 112 cm, c. 1500; trimmed all around with new galloon and supporting velvet, a few repairs due to age, otherwise in good state of preservation, with exceptionally bright colours and high weaving quality; From the middle of the 15th century, Tournai developed into a centre for Burgundian tapestry. The need to depict love in a noble, stylised manner was amply realised in the rendering of the medieval way of life. In an imaginary landscape, a knight embraces his sweetheart, wearing an elaborately woven crown. The ever-present chaperones stand near a well, deep in conversation. High rows of trees reach almost to the upper edge and leave only a little room for a thin band of sky.
