Ernst Fuchs *
(born Vienna 1930) ‘Portrait Jean Claude Polus’ signed and dated Ernst Fuchs 1961, egg tempera, resin on paper mounted on card, 50 x 37.7 cm, framed, (K)
Illustrated in: Fuchs über Ernst Fuchs, Bilder und Zeichnungen von 1945–1976, with an introductory text by Marcel Brion, Draeger, Paris - Ernst Fuchs Vienna, R. Piper & Co. Verlag, Munich 1977, p. 211 (cropped ill.) Exhibited: Le Visible Autrement, Musée de Noyers sur Serein, 1998 Provenance: private ownership, France .... There have never been many people who could follow in my footsteps, and those that did so, not always because they could or wanted to, almost always developed a teacher or pupil relationship with me. Of those who were, and are, a teacher to me, aside from my parents, I should name Albert Paris Gütersloh and Salvador Dali. The friendship, which links me to both of the masters of my guild, inspires me with the kind of awe that I feel before the Old Masters. In this part of my life, a Virgil of some kind accompanied me. When I look back, I can even say that for each part of my life, I was always accorded the right advisor. It was not always conscious, but of all the people I met who fostered me and my art, no-one accompanied me for as long on my path as Gütersloh and Dali. ...
