Giorgio de Chirico
(Volos, Greece, 1888–1978 Rome) ‘Due cavalli, presso un mare procelloso, e sotto un castello’, circa 1955, signed G. de Chirico, titled on the reverse, with confirmation of authenticity by the artist and attested by notary, D. Gandolfo, Rome, 6 October 1959, oil on canvas, 43 x 62.5 cm, framed, (PP)
Photo certificate: Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico, Rome, 14 March 2010, no. 0014/03/10 OT Provenance: European private collection After 1930 Giorgio de Chirico experimented with new painterly methods, which was very different stylistically from his metaphysical painting. He arrived at a style of painting which had enormous pathos, as can be seen, for instance, in the composition, ‘Due cavalli, presso un mare procelloso, e sotto un castello’. Galloping horses – accentuated with passages of red paint – race against the direction of the viewer’s gaze from right to left. The strip of land along which the animals move is extended on the right-hand side of the canvas by a hill with a castle on it. The turquoise-blue sea and waves, the mountainous landscape behind it and the brown colour tones dominating the sky are characteristic of de Chirico’s dynamic style.
