Pieter van Bloemen
(Antwerp 1657–1720) Resting huntsmen in an Arcadian landscape, oil on canvas, 50 x 61 cm, framed,
This characteristic work by Pieter van Bloemen was painted after his stay in Italy, since architectural ruins appear as set pieces of Roman topography in the background of his work only after his return in 1694. In 1685 Van Bloemen went to Rome, where he was associated with the Dutch artists' colony, the ‘Bentvleughels’. Due to the many representations of flags, ensigns and pennants in his hunting scenes, he gained the nickname, ‘Lo Standardo’. Years after his return to his home city, where he would direct the Lukasgilde from 1699, his oeuvre continued to be marked by his Italian experience. His popularity among aristocratic collectors, who held him in high esteem above all because of his soldiering and hunting themes, is given testimony in the fact that in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich alone there are eight of his works. Van Bloemen's mostly small-format hunting scenes are to be found in almost all of the princely collections in Europe.
