We are grateful to Drs. Jan Kosten of the RKD, The Hague, for his assistance with the cataloguing of this work as a picture by a northern French Caravaggist. A comparable work by Valentin de Boulogne was sold at Sotheby’s, London, on 9 July 1998 as lot 77. See also 'St. Paul at his desk', a work attributed to Valentin de Boulogne (formerly Gallery Thos. Agnew, London, see Burlington Magazine, 69, 1989, p. 160).
