Even if only self-portraits by this artist are known to date, we have proof that he was indeed active as a portraitist, as is confirmed by the inventory of the Doria Collection. A list of pictures from his workshop compiled after the artist‘s death in 1625 mentions four examples. The serious but yet lively expression of the present sitter suggests that the painting dates from the artist‘s last years in Milan and was done around the same time as his self-portrait from 1624. We are grateful to Prof. Filippo Maria Ferro for confirming the attribution and cataloguing the present painting.
