Lot No. 29

Gillis Coignet (Congnet)

(Antwerp 1535–1599 Hamburg) The Penitent Magdalene in a landscape, signed at lower right, oil on panel, 127 x 92.5 cm, framed

In the 1650s, Gillis Coignet travelled to Italy, where he was confronted with the works of his Venetian contemporaries. He was above all influenced by Titian, which becomes also obvious from the present composition. Coignet was a renowned artist and in 1584 was appointed chairman of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. He left his native town in 1586 for religious reasons, moving to Amsterdam and later to Hamburg.
