Christian Seybold

Christian Seybold - Old Master Paintings

(Mainz 1697–1768 Vienna)
An old woman,
oil on copper, 41 x 34 cm, framed

In Elfriede Baum’s Katalog des Österreichischen Barockmuseums im Unteren Belvedere in Wien (Vienna-Munich 1980, p. 646) one can read about Seybold’s character heads: ‘Balthasar Denner’s portraiture became exemplary for Seybold at an early date, although it was not the only relevant influence. It was primarily resorted to as a model for his extremely meticulously painted portraits - mostly pendants - of old men and women, as well as for his numerous self-portraits. What went beyond Denner’s art was, first of all, a fascination with reality that bordered obsession and which can be observed above all in his self-portraits, as well as a freer, more painterly attitude finding its closest correspondence in Piazzetta’s art. There is no proof that Seybold actually sojourned in Venice, but he must have at least been familiar with engravings based on Piazzetta’s compositions. Occasionally he also chose historicising traits or a sentimental approach, thanks to which, in conjunction with changing costumes and accessories, he brought variety to the few basic types of his figural repertoire.’
