The myth of Marsyas was one of those told by Ovid in his Metamorphoses. Marsyas challenged Apollo to a musical competition and lost, whereupon, as a punishment, Apollo flayed him whilst he was alive, and a river sprang from his blood. Originally depicted as a satyr with a double flute, he was later also represented as a faun with goat's legs and panpipes.
