Rare Empire sewing table, - Works of Art

Vienna circa 1810/15. A mahogany-veneered softwood table with a column support on a round plinth base, the column divided into 2 arched supports, terminating in fully carved and gold-painted eagle heads, the lower part of the column is entwined with a gold-painted snake. The slightly domed body for the sewing implements rests on the lion heads/eagle heads. The top is decorated in a marquetry star pattern and segments, the fitted interior is veneered in maple and fitted with compartments, the inside of the lid is veneered in maple with a star pattern. Height ca. 75 cm, diameter ca. 50 cm. Some ageing and wear. (DOC)

An almost identical piece is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue of the Künstlerhaus, Vienna, “Moderne Vergangenheit 1800-1900” (21.05.1981 - 09.08.1981)
