signed and indistinctly dated lower right,

The present picture is close in composition to Quirin van Brekelenkam’s Goldweigher (Vanitas) in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no. 2757). Angelika Lasius, in her monograph on the artist, says the composition can be understood as an examination of miserliness and greed. The viola da gamba and the books are also symbols of vanity.
