The battle of Abukir took place on 25 July 1799 near the village of Abukir, about 15 km northeast of Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, between Napoleon’s French army and Turkish troops. The battle is not to be confused with the famous naval battle at Abukir in 1798, in which Horatio Nelson defeated the French fleet. After the conquest of Egypt in 1798 and his ultimately unsuccessful campaign to Syria in spring 1799, Napoleon retreated to Egypt in June 1799. There, an Ottoman army of 18,000 men under Mustafa Pasha had settled near Abukir. Napoleon attacked the Ottomans with 5,000 men of infantry and 1,000 cavalry, inflicting a devastating defeat on them. On August 2, the Abukir Fort fell back into French hands.
