Stuttgart (Southwest Germany), c. 143 x 207 cm, around 1900. Description of the image: This is the second part of the pictorial representation of a poem by Johann Ludwig Uhland. It depicts a late summer scene, observed from the same angle. The fields are being harvested, the white storks about to leave for their African winter quarters and the sunny, cheerful atmosphere will soon vanish. Even the sheep - covered in thick wool - look sad and the black dog of the once young shepherd has visibly aged. Black storm clouds gather in the sky, frail figures visit the cemetery and - almost unnoticed - death enters the scene from the lower right side of the image, underlying transience. This embroidery is in excellent condition, without any damaged areas or signs of wear to the pattern. Additionally mounted on flexible metal frame.
