The fact that Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger considered this Arcadian landscape to be a particularly successful composition is proved by an etching that the artist himself made on the basis of the painting shown here. It reproduces the Arcadian landscape down to the smallest detail of the shepherds, sheep and vegetation, albeit in reverse. A print of this etching can be found in the Albertina Collection in the Klebeband “Deutsche nach Sektionen III”, vol. 49, p. 2, while the etching is also mentioned in Friedrich von Bötticher’s Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts as “Heroische Landschaft mit Figuren. Mit Namen u. Jahreszahl 1811” [Heroic landscape with figures. With name and date 1811].
