We are grateful to Massimo Pulini for confirming the attribution of the present painting and for his help in cataloguing.

The present painting relates to a larger composition Queen Artemisia drinks the ashes of Germanicus, developed by Francesco Curradi in at least two paintings, in the Villa Medicea La Petraia, Florence, and in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.

Pulini dates the present painting to 1620s, when moralizing and courteous subjects were popular in Tuscany. The solemnly, dynamic pose of Artemisia is also used by Curradi for the figure of the protagonist in The Triumph of Judith, in the Musée des Augustine, Toulouse (inv. no. 2004 1.48).
