Alessandro Milesi
(Venice 1856–1945)
The Pumpkin Seller, signed Milesi, oil on canvas, 87 x 63.5 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private Collection Italy.
This painting is an unpublished work. A first version of the ‚Pumpkin Seller‘ was presented at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Milan in 1881, while this one was probably painted between 1878 and 1880. Alessandro Milesi used to do several versions of the same subject, especially when it came to paintings to be presented at national and international exhibitions. The painting is in Favretto‘s style and depicts a scene from daily life in the lagoon city. It shows the encounter between a young pumpkin seller, displaying her goods on a wooden tray, and an elderly woman sitting on the threshold of her home in a junk dealer‘s shop.
