An exceptional Kete mask, R. d. Congo. - Tribal Art

Early 20th century. Wood, pigments, 33 cm high. Whilst 'Woot' is the creator, and founder of the ruling kingdom among the Kuba, this mask is his counterpart: Bwoom. His identity changes according to different mythologies but he always represents a subversive force within the royal court. The Bwoom masquerade is often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot, creating awareness of the Kings fragile position. (VJ)
