Wood, pigments, 36 cm high. The proportionately large cubistic head emphasizes the source of knowledge, essential for an important chief. These figures were commissioned by high ranking chiefs to show the lineage to the collective ancestral history. Like many of the famous Hemba ancestor figures, these regal figures are regarded as a paragon of classical African art. (VJ)
