Lot No. 359

Julius Diez *

(Nuremberg 1870–1957 Munich) Don Quijote de la Mancha, signed and dated Iul Diez 1911, watercolor, white body color on cardboard, 42 x 32 cm, mounted, framed, (BH)

The watercolor is illustrated in the magazine “Jugend” (1913/Jg. 18, Heft 18, p. 511).
The magazine “Jugend” was an art and literary magazine, which was founded by Georg Hirth und Fritz von Ostini in 1896. It is considered the eponym for the art movement Jugendstil. The focus of the magazine was laid on artistic and culturally critical texts and depictions. 250 artists were already represented in the first annual issues. Many of the artists were unknown at that time but had connections to Munich. In the early years Arnold Böcklin and Franz von Stuck, later Emil Nolde, Ernst Barlach, Julius Klinger, Lovis Corinth and Georges Grosz were active for the magazine until it was shut down in 1940.
