We are grateful to Jeroen Kapelle, RKD - Netherlands Institute of Art History, for the scientific assistance.
Jan Michiel Ruyten (Ruijten) focused mainly on city and genre views, occasionally also painting landscapes. He completed his artistic training at the Academy in Antwerp. By 1870, he was based in The Hague. After successfully participating in several exhibitions in Belgium, he achieved international success in London and Vienna. In the present lot, the Belgian painter shows us a scene before his hometown of Antwerp. In the foreground, a woman in a traditional hat sits on her richly laden donkey; the tower of the Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal) is visible in the distance. This painting clearly shows Ruyten’s romanticising style influenced by 17th century Dutch painting.
