c. 1805, elm frame on four legs, original black paint coat, partial gilding, painted decoration in gold, brass sabots, height approx. 89 cm, approx. width 53 cm, depth approx. 59 cm. (MHA)

The Belgian Jean-Joseph Chapuis lived from 1765 to 1864. The present model is the first laminated bentwood chair design realised as a lightweight construction. Examples of this chair – a milestone in the history of design – are preserved in the collections of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, etc.
