The proportions of the objects in a still life can drift into the unreal despite their adherence to natural scale. Things can become huge and tiny – the painting contains their scale. Still lifes give us more freedom than landscapes or portraits, because we are involved from the very composition of the subject onwards, we are in charge of its construction from the beginning. (It is good that it happens in the silence of the studio, because people do not care about our architectural plans.
