Lot No. 565

Eugène Louis Boudin

(Honfleur 1824–1898 Deauville)
Honfleur, le port, c. 1892–1896, signed E. Boudin, oil on panel, 13.8 x 22 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private Collection, Belgium.

We are grateful to Galerie Brame & Lorenceau for kindly confirming the authenticity on the basis of the original. The work has been included in Eugène Boudin’s archive at Galerie Brame & Lorenceau.

A certificate issued by Archives Eugène Boudin, 20 February 2023, is available upon request.

The present work was executed in Honfleur, a harbour in Normandy and birth-place of Eugène Boudin. The attention to the reflections of the sky and the water is characteristic of his later work, in which he often dedicated over half of the canvas to an expansive, cloud-filled sky.

Eugene Louis Boudin was considered to be one of the most important plein-air painters of his time and a pioneer of Impressionism. He was a source of inspiration for the next generation of artists, in particular Claude Monet.
