Josef Maria Olbrich, a music cabinet from a music room, Darmstadt, c. 1905


sycamore wood and pearl maple veneer, pearwood stained black; inlaid woods; upper superstructure with coffered doors and inlaid quatrefoil motifs; all-round black lacquered mouldings; hinged double door; interior with one shelf on each side, two drawers at the lower centre, and a larger shelf above; brass drawer handles with oval beaded borders; exterior fittings also made of brass with beaded borders; below the lockable cabinet area, one shelf curved in a semicircle at the front; upper strip in the shape of a fourfold alternating cube frieze; coffered strip with black trim below and above; surmounted by a smaller stepped top; the upper part is supported by two angular pilasters, the end is formed by a triple black plinth with coffered mouldings; base plate with four black fluted feet; one key; lateral supports missing; signs of age and use; professionally restored; height 150 cm, width 125 cm, depth 47.8 cm.
