A large mantel clock, probably Charles Gallé, St. Clément, c. 1870/80


fayence, light brown body, white tin glaze, painted with underglaze and overglaze colours in the style of Emile Gallé, Nancy; oval base with rocaille feet with an oval medallion in the centre; the latter with depiction of a tower with houses and a landscape background; above the base there is a two-level superstructure with a crenellated tower containing a round clock with brass mount and beige enamelled dial; below the superstructure a crenellated defensive wall completes the ensemble; above in the centre a helmet with part of an armour; on the left side a sculptural palm tree with shield, on the right side a composition of openwork rocaille and acanthus formations; on the underside a lion with its head bent forward; minor professional restoration; clock with key and pendulum; clock not tested; inscribed St. Clément in brown on the back at the bottom; height 49.5 cm.
