Lot No. 23

An exceptional Senufo equestrian figure or Syonfolo,

Ivory Coast/Ghana. Wood, 33 cm high. Figures of a rider on horseback are common in the former Gold Coast, from Togo to the Ivory Coast. Most are in the form of amulets, brass-casting, that represent a bush spirit, mandeo (plural: mandebele) or tugu (plural: tugubele) on his steed and were usually kept on a personal shrine or used as an aid by the diviner. The horse was associated with speed, swiftness and prestige, but also with violence and disorder since horses were linked since pre-colonial times to warriors and slave traders. (VJ)

Private collection Belgium.
