A Mwana Pwo mask,
Angola. Wood, fibre, metal, 31 cm high. This type of mask, 'mwana pwo', depicts a 'beautiful girl' who comes from the afterlife on benevolent visitation of the living. At the same time, they are reminiscent of important female ancestors of the Chokwe people. The mask is used by men in dances with tightly woven costumes on stilts. The present 'mwana pwo' is an especially beautiful example in 'classical' style. On its forehead the carved tribal mark of the Chokwe people, the 'cingelyengelye' is recognizable. The eyebrows form a high arch above the slit, almond-shaped eyes. Across both cheeks run decorative scarification marks, carved in high relief, also called 'tears'. The nose is small and delicate.
