Lot No. 89

Sepik figure,

Papua New Guinea. Wood, 36 cm high. Roughly 200 separate groups speaking distinct languages live around the Sepik River. As might be expected, the variety of artistic styles found among these groups is exceptional but certain regional differences apply. Both figures and masks frequently feature enormously exaggerated often birdlike noses, which signify masculinity (females have short noses). (VJ)
