The son of a marine officer, was born as Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg. From 1806 he studied at the art academy with Ilja J. Repin. He published fashion sketches in the magazine Damskij mir under the pseudonym Pitch and Tir. In 1910 he emigrated to Paris. He derived his stage name from the French pronounciation of the initials of his name. In Paris he studied at the Académie Julian. Between 1913 and 1914 Erté drew for the press and from 1915 onwards the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar published his drawings and he designed covers and fashion illustrations. Erté also designed costume and stage sets for operas and ballets, such as for the Folies Bergère in Paris. In the 1960s, Erté also produced lithographs, serigraphs and metal statuettes.
