Eduard Engerth executed the present work as a young graduate of the Academy on commission from Archduke Charles Ludwig as one of his first non-religious history paintings. It was displayed at the Academy Exhibition in the St. Anna-Hof in Vienna in 1846. Eduard Engerth was Professor and Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, and in 1871 he was appointed director of the Imperial-Royal Picture Gallery at the Belvedere. He compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of the painting collection for the new Kunsthistorisches Hofmuseum.
